Liebchen [poem]

Liebchen
my sweet daughter is asking
what does her dad look like?
she knows that her Nubian nose
is definitely from me
but she’s wondering,
where on earth did she get
those big, round, honey colored eyes from?
she knows it’s not from me
and h
er hair,
it’s coal black,
unlike mine.
she’s asking questions
what does her dad look like?
she’s got the same dentition as yours
that gapped teeth that always got me tripping.
I’m scared
I do not want her
to put all these uncommon features together
and imagine what you look like
I spared her the ache
and refused showing her your pictures
for how could I explain to her
that the man whose features she has
didn’t want her at all
I spared her the ache
for how do I explain to her
that her supposed dad
took one good look at her in her cradle
and walked away
